Embers In The Sea

The Story

As a band, we are constantly working on music. With life, not to mention the pandemic, we’ve been thrown to different places, separated by quarantine, and still had life continue. This song “Embers In The Sea” is a great representation of what both good times and hardships can lead to in a song.

When Wade (founding member and acoustic guitarist) found himself away from the band on his chicken farm, music was not a priority. There would be times where he would go for weeks at a time without playing the guitar or getting to work with the guys and then BOOM, a song came to him in a dream. He jumped out of bed and recorded the beginnings of what he had deemed “Wade’s Opus.” The bridge with its “Oh Oh OOO Oh” and the chorus of “Oh my soul cries out to you” poured from dreamworld to iPhone. Wade always claimed lyrics and vocal melodies were out of his reach; this was a big deal.

From there it was handed off to Brian who was dealing with his own new state of life; going back and forth from the hospital to raise his newborn preemie. It was touch and go. In the parking lot of the hospital he wrote the verses about crying to God to save her.

With the band in pieces, Peter G, Lee, and Ralph still had rehearsal and with a chart and a phone recording we started running the song. It made no sense to work on it, and yet we played the song again and again.

In the months following, Brian’s baby got stronger and came home, Wade made his way back for a time, and we were ready to play the opus. Since it hit the stage it has become one of the most powerful moments in our set, with parts trading between guitarists and the piano and harmonies that stretch our vocal range. When we were finally able to take the song into the studio we had a reunion of sorts with band members old and new on the track. Brian’s wife, mother of his daughter, and COVID-times drummer, Monica, came into the studio to bring even more authenticity to the feelings behind the lyrics. Three guitarists recorded parts on the track; Wade was able to bring his acoustic guitar and sing his Opus. Our stalwart Uncle Ralph traded solos, and our newest member Dr. George Woods showed off his skills.

Brian’s daughter is now happy and healthy, and she loves to see her dad perform on stage. At the time, none of us knew if any day would be the day when there was nothing left and it was time to burn it all to the ground. Music keeps us all connected in hard times and we can’t wait to share this track with the world and connect to people out there who are afraid of what might come next and those who remember those times.

Lyrics

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left of me
Nothing left of me

Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea

I never listened well, but God I am sure listening now
I’ve never talked to you but I hope that I can figure it out
I’d give up everything to get out of this hole, I’m drowning
I’m getting desperate, running out of time, I’m counting down

I’ve got a lot to lose yet I ain’t got nothing at all
I’m just as afraid to jump and I am afraid to fall
I’d bet the whole damn world and I wouldn’t care if I lose it all
But that girl’s my everything and I didn’t know I could love something this small
Oh, and I love you

Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you

I’d give up everything just so I could touch your face
Wrap you in my arms and take you away from this place
Your life is in His hands, and I can’t afford to lose my faith
He gave me everything even though I don’t deserve his grace
Oh, God I love you

Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you

Oh Oh
Oh Oh
Oh Oh
Oh Oh

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left of me
Nothing left for me
Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left of me
Nothing left for me
Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea

Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you
Oh my soul cries out to you

Oh Oh
Oh Oh
Oh Oh
Oh Oh

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left of me

Nothing left for me
Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left of me
Nothing left for  me
Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea

Take my body, put it in the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There is nothing left of me
Nothing left of me
Take this house, burn it to the ground
There’s nothing left for me now
There’s nothing left for me
Just embers in the sea
